I must be a masochist for liking this kind of game, but we got to see a little “classic” Braves Baseball today, the kind where you are nervous right up to the very end. This game was a throw back to the 90’s where it was pitching that got the job done and the bats did just enough. If we start getting on the right side of these type of games, for a change, it will be a long season for the rest of the NL East.
Pitching, pitching, pitching that was the story of today game. It was Smoltz’s first game since coming off the DL and coming off his modified spring training. I’d say the results were pretty good, as he pretty much dominated for the time he was in. He held the Mets to only 2 hits over 5 innings, not allowing a run to cross in the process striking out 6. He threw 78 pitches, I guess Bobby felt that was enough for his first outing . The pen was outstanding. Blaine Boyer was at his best. He struck out 2 and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield. Ohman also got the job done, 1 hit, no walks. Moylan pitched the 8th, allowed a lead off single and nothing else. Soriano closed it out for his first save, struggled a little with control, but was more than equal to the task. (thanks to Tex)
Santana did a pretty good job limiting the Brave’s hitting, but the Braves were able to score a single run off him, with 7 scattered hits. The lone run off Santana was driven in by Escobar in the third. Luckily for us, Tex drove in 2 more off Heilman. The only Brave to have more than one hit was Diaz with 2. Tex did have a home run.
Tomorrow’s game, 8:35 PM. Not nationally televised.

Don’t forget defense. Teix might have hit that long ball, but that stretch on Kotsay’s double play and the diving stop to end the game were just as important!
Early in the week our defense looked like mush, but today it was fantastic! The only miscue was Kotsay and Frenchy not making up their minds on that can of corn in the gap between center and left field, luckily it didn’t hurt us.
