Braves Report

Game 7

by rlgv on Apr.07, 2008, under Recaps

I think its pretty clear who the “hard luck” pitcher of the staff is going to be this season.  Glavine is sporting a cool 0.79 era in his first two starts and what does he have to show for it?  NOTHING.  The pen has blown both of them.

Glavine pitched masterfully tonight.  In fact, if one or two close calls had gone his way he would have been able to pitch 7 maybe 8 innings (OK, I’m stretching), he was that efficient.  But, a couple of BBs, pitch count started to mount and Bobby thought is was best to pull him (perhaps hoping to avoid a late season meltdown?).  Regardless, he went 6.1 innings, only allowed 2 hits striking out three (in a row).  Not a bad line for anyone.  Moylan was ineffective, but managed to get the job done without any damage, giving up a hit and hitting a batter.  Boyer was less effective.  In fact, he gave up the 2 hits that cost us the game.  This Jekyll / Hyde pen is infuriating. Ohman got the final out of the game.

The hitting recap will be pretty quick.  No one hit… Well, almost no one.  KJ, Escobar and Chipper each had one.  Chipper drove in the loan run.  The Braves really need to start being more patient at the plate.  They need to realize the pitcher will keep throwing pitches until he gets them out.  No need to jump on the first or second pitch leading to an easy out.  But, I’ve been saying that for quite some time.

Tomorrow’s game, 8:35 PM, not nationally televised.

I agree that the bullpen has been frustrating so far this season. Alot of people seem convinced that the return of Mike Gonzalez will solve the pen problems but I am not convinced of that at all. First, rarely does someone come right back from TJ surgery to find themselves in top form and second, if the Braves find themselves 7+ games back then it is going to be hard to make up the ground within the division.

Wren needs to make a move to go get a proven arm on the market. I think Rouch would be a solid 8th inning fit for this bullpen.
