Game 45

Filed under: Recaps — rlgv @ 11:38 pm

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the Mets’ locker room tonight (minus the Church injury). I’ve been reading the Mets are on the brink of implosion and a day like today can’t help. The Braves hadn’t swept a double header since 2003, and then to take both games here, in such embarrassing fashion (from the Mets’ perspective), it has got to sting.

The story of the night can only be Campy. He has been great from the pen, in long relief. He deserved this chance to start, and he made the most of it! In the pregame show, one of the announcer said, “Let’s see if Campy can match Glavine, pitch for pitch.” I thought, no chance, Glavine was just too good. I was wrong, Campy matched Glavine, and did it with fewer pitches. Campy went six scoreless innings, only allowing three hits (same as Glavine). Oh, it was also his first big league win, and dropped his ERA under one! Bennett pitched the seventh and breezed. Boyer got into trouble in the eighth, gave up two runs. Acosta had to bail him out. Acosta pitched another 1.1 innings tonight. He should have a well deserved day off tomorrow.

Where to start with the bats. Well, again, there is Chipper, two more hits. He also scored and drove one in. Escobar (you’d think I’d get bored talking about Chipper and Escobar?) also had two, scored once. The dagger through the heart for the Mets was Kotsay’s eighth inning, two run home run.

Braves win again today 6-2.

Tomorrow’s game, 7:10 PM on ESPN.
