The Braves had a pretty exciting day. First, they won, which is always good (and exciting now a days). Second, Charlie Morton got the call up to start and pitched well, better than we could have expected, as a matter of fact. The only bad news on the day was Soriano going back on the DL. Not really a surprise, we needed space for Morton and Soriano hadn’t been able to even warm up in a while. Maybe this little streak means an end to our road woes.

Where to start, both the bats and the pitching came up big. I’ll start with the bats, since they have been in more of a funk. We had a few hits today, 11. Not super, but we had a little power and hit better with RISP which allowed us to hammer out nine runs. Escobar led off the order well. He reached base four times on two hits and two walks. He also scored two and drove two in. Brandon Jones (aka trade bait?) was on fire. He had three hits, a double, a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Blanco scored twice on two hits. KJ also launched his his seventh home run. A good night at the plate.

The pitching story of the night has to be Morton. He struck out the first batter he faced, getting the game off to a good start. He did a great job keeping the Angels off balance changing speeds with movement and attacking the zone. He went six innings, allowed only five hits and three runs. He struck out four against only one walk. Acosta was better, not back to his filthy stuff, but he didn’t allow a run to cross. Ring and Boyer each got out the only batter they faced. Ohman went 1.1 innings, allowed a run to cross, but by the time he was in, the game was pretty much over.

Braves win big, 9 – 4.

Tomorrow’s game, 8:05 PM on ESPN.
