Well, just when I was about to give up on the season, the Braves reel me back in.
While traveling to the Mississippi Braves game last night, a friend and I were listening to the game and we turned it off when Ty Wiggington hit a grand slam to give the Astros a 5-1 lead. When we got to the park, we were surprised to learn the Braves had tied it up. While at the park, the M-Braves gave updates of the game every half inning.
Now, on to the recap. The Braves used seven pitchers on the night. Charlie Morton got the start and allowed all 6 of the Astros’ runs. He lasted 6 innings, giving up 6 runs, 8 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 2. Boyer and Ohman followed Morton, each threw an inning allowing only one hit apiece. Mike Gonalez came out for the ninth and tenth innings, which he pitched perfectly, striking out four and allowing no base runners. Carlyle and Acosta would follow Gonzalez, each pitching 3 innings and each allowing a pair of base runners. Royce Ring pitched an inning and picked up the win.
Now on to the hitting. The Braves as a team had 65 at bats. They haven’t had that many in back-to-back games this year. But that is what happens when you play a 17 inning game. Chipper went 3 for 5 with a triple, homer, and 4 walks. He scored 3 runs while driving in 2. Teixeira went 3 for 7 on the game. He drove in 3 including the game winning run in the 17th. WGC went 4 for 9 while driving in 2.
Braves win 7 - 6 in 17 innings.
Next game, tonight at the Dodgers at 10:10 EST.
Side note: Frenchy went 4 for 5 for the M-Braves and is now hitting .538 since joining them.
