Game 144
by rlgv on Sep.08, 2008, under Recaps
A few recaps ago Ben posted one of the world constants in this universe was the Braves losing one run games on the road. I think we have found another. The Braves losing in extras.
The pitchers, this is going to take a while. A 14 inning game uses a lot of pitchers, ten to be exact. Reyes started the game and was good. He gave us six innings, limiting the Nats to only one run on four hits. Enough for a win? Nope. Tavarez went an inning, giving up a run. Boyer gave up two runs to be hung with a blown save. Ohman had to bail him out of that inning, and did. Gonzo rebounded from from his rough outing with a scoreless inning. Nunez went .2 scoreless innings, while Jeff Ridgway went 1.1. After that, Carlyle came in and went two scoreless innings. Bennett was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in .1 innings. Julio got the last two, pointless outs.
You’d think in 14 innings we could score more than four runs, but not our bats. Blanco, back in the lead off spot, had two hits, scored two runs and an RBI. Prado had two hits and drove one in. Chipper had three hits and two RBI. Escobar went three for seven (SEVEN?!?).
Braves lose 4 – 7

This team could’ve easily won this game in the 12th (?), when they had runners on first and second with nobody out. But, of course, they failed to even move them.
The icing on the cake was the winning run coming up to the plate with runners on second and third. Frenchy was batting, though, and he ended the game on the first pitch he saw. Blah.

Yeah, another ugly loss. BUT, hope springs eternal … OK, maybe not until this team gets a top-shelf starer and a power-hitting outfielder.
At least the Braves won last night. In a season where they’ve done just about everything to lose games, it was nice to see them get a little fluky luck go their way with the balk in the 10th. Campillo pitched well, and even though they stunk in the clutch (as usual), at least the offense put guys on base.
Bud.
