Game 146

Who is this team and what have they done with the 2008 Atlanta Braves? I don’t know quite what to make of this, yesterday an extra inning win, today a come-from-behind-after-the-pen-blows-it win. It’s almost like they care?
Parr is making his case to be in the starting rotation next year. In his first two outings, he has compiled a 0.00 ERA. Tonight, he went six scoreless (duh) innings, striking out five. After Parr’s outstanding performance, Boyer was horrible. He didn’t get a single batter out and gave up three runs. Ohman gave up a run getting one out. Bennett went .2 innings of scoreless ball to get the win. Tavarez and Julio each went a scoreless inning.
Lots going on behind the plate, again the top of the order got it done, Anderson, two hits. KJ two hits (both home runs), Chipper three hits, and McCann three hits. KJ and Anderson each drove in two and Chipper also had a home run.
Braves win 9 – 5.

Yeah, they actually are resembling a major-league baseball team. That’s five out of the past eight and really, if you factor in KJ’s ball that bounced over the wall Saturday and the bullpen meltdown Sunday, this team could be 7-1 since last Tuesday.
Good win last night. It’s a crying shame the bullpen blew it for Parr, but that kid is really grabbing my attention. No walks last night, five strikeouts, no runs, six solid innings. Worked in and out of trouble a little bit, too, which was great to see. I think you’ve gotta give him the ball another couple of times before the season ends, and consider him a candidate for the rotation next spring.
Another good showing from the offense. KJ is killing it right now, and Hoss is back on top in the batting race. What I really liked is the way the offense picked up the bullpen after they let the Rox tie the game. Good to see that.

It’s kind of frightening that KJ has gotten his groove on. I’ve been ragging on him all year.

Yeah, and now, look at the Braves: winners of six out of nine heading to Shea this weekend. Maybe, just maybe, the Braves can keep this up and put a big damper on the Mets’ playoff push. That would be sweet.
I’ll tell you something I’ve noticed lately, and it’s the fact the Bravos are not letting things get to them. What I mean by that is when they lose the lead or something doesn’t go their way, it seems in recent days the Braves just shake it off and go right back to work. I like that. They’ve faced so much this season, I think it’s critical for them to play well the final two and a half weeks and build momentum toward 2009.
It may be crazy, but I’m excited with what I’m starting to see out of this team. They KNOW they’re playing for their jobs, most of them anyway. I’m glad to see them playing like they care and they want to win. This franchise needs that as a boost entering the offseason.

Well, I’ve been saying nearly all season that they need a fire lit under their ass. Perhaps the threat of losing their jobs is proper motivation?
I realize the season is almost mathematically over, but it’s been great seeing people like Prado break out of their career-long funks and start hitting the ball well. If only Frenchy could do the same, or this team finds an outfielder with some power, then I think they’ll be cooking up something good.
